The Desktop Publisher Freelancer / Consultant will create and edit complex documents to specifications using expert word processing knowledge, support document finalization, audit figure references and bookmarks in documents, conduct quality assurance checks at designated intervals and provide status to team lead.


  • Prepare, format, and other desktop-publishing related requirements (page orientation/limits; attachment requirements; tabulation) and ensure compliance with all requirements
  • Audit figure references and bookmarks in documents
  • Conduct quality assurance pre-checks and provide status to team lead
  • Track and monitor document processing progress
  • Use MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint & templates using styles for reports, data, citations, etc., based on requirements
  • Proof and incorporate high-end graphics into documentation
  • Support multiple projects and other tasks simultaneously, work to deadline
  • Work closely with subject matter experts, technical writers and teams
  • Work with scanned documents, PDF conversion, copy documentation, and print tabs
  • Assist and perform quality checks and color reviews


  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience with production of printed material (documentation, proposals, etc.)
  • Advanced knowledge and use of Microsoft Office products
  • Proficient in various desktop publishing programs such as MS Publisher, Adobe InDesign
  • Knowledge of and experience with Section 508 compliance activities
  • Associates Degree or Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience in lieu of degree
  • At least five (5) years working knowledge of Adobe Acrobat Professional, Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Illustrator)
  • Ability to share portfolio of past accomplishments and work
  • Background investigation required
  • Functional technical skills in:
  • Web design, Digital imaging, multi-media design, technical writing, computer illustration, layout, and design, desktop publishing basics, video graphics, animation, special effects, publishing and image design, computer typography and composition
  • Excellent written/oral communications skills
  • Organizational, analytical, and project/time management skills
  • Ability to work quickly, accurately, and efficiently under tight deadlines
  • Experience with HHS proposal submission processes a plus
  • Availability for short-term, quick-turnaround work during the summer months
