The Role

As a product leader at Mystery.org, you will be involved in every aspect of product development, from understanding the user and the market better than anyone in the company, clearly defining which problems to solve, to helping the team design, develop and launch features and measuring its impact. You will lead a small but fast-moving team of engineers, designers, and other cross-functional partners, and strategically bring ideas from conception to launch. You’ll help us grow Mystery Science from the 8.5+ million students (in 50% of U.S. elementary schools) to 100 million teachers and students around the world.

Within a month, you’ll be leading one of Mystery’s cross-functional Product-Design-Engineering teams. You’ll ramp up by deeply understanding the persona you are working with (likely district administrators) and regularly increase the company’s understanding of your persona. You’ll synthesize key user pain points, collect data from stakeholders, and collaborate intensely with the team to discover the solutions of highest user value, business impact, technical feasibility and ease of use. Over time, you’ll develop a stack-rank list of priorities, and define the highest ROI projects for your team to work on.

You will report to Varun Gulati, our Director of Product. We are headquartered in San Francisco and this position is open to both local and US-based remote candidates.

About You

  • You have 3+ years of experience as a high-performing PM, ideally working with multiple user personas or with a consumer-facing product. You have shipped several innovative product features that have made an impact on the users and to the business.
  • You have led a cross-functional team that consistently delivers results. You encourage your team to have a strong bias for action, yet demonstrate an earnest and humble willingness to learn and stay curious.
  • You consider empathy one of your superpowers, and you know how to get into the mind of the user. You’re jazzed about customer discovery just as much as you are about data and metrics. You can speak in value propositions and know how to creatively inspire people to use the product.
  • You feel comfortable diving into and understanding the technical trade- offs of a project, discussing with engineers, and making the best scope and time-to-market decisions.
  • Your vision of success is grounded in data. You know how to define & measure success for features you launch, have a process for separating the signal from the noise, and can deliver growth on KPIs.
  • You’re energized about the prospect of helping kids learn, helping teachers teach, and finding new and creative ways to help students all around the world stay curious.

Day-to-day

You’ll have a broad range of responsibilities and latitude in your role as a Product Manager. On one day you may be leading discovery calls to deeply understand the need of your user persona. Later that week, you may synthesize your customer insights along with credible data, and develop a clear and focused strategy for product improvements which you’ll present to the whole company.

Every day, you’ll work closely with a cross-functional team (a pod) to drive execution by making trade-offs, anticipating staffing needs and risks, and ensuring frequent and clear communication. You’ll communicate product plans, build consensus, work collaboratively, and align priorities with stakeholders across the organization, including Content, Customer Experience, Growth, Communications, and District Partnerships.

And of course, we are a science company, after all! On some days, you’ll work very closely with our Growth team to design and run tests and experiments, leveraging your understanding of growth models, strategies, and tactics. The data we generate will help you create, optimize, and iterate on acquisition, activation, and engagement funnels.

We’re doing this by building the missing internet for children. Our first tool was created for children to use in the classroom. We have teachers signed up from 89% of elementary schools in the U.S. and now 50% of schools use us every month. Over the past decade, grownups have been given this superpower but children have been left behind. So we’re collecting every question children ask and creating video explanations for all of them. We think this will be the most important learning tool ever created.

Meet The Team

On your first day at Mystery.org, you’ll meet a group of 50 people who are passionate about learning and who each love their respective crafts. Our co-founder, Doug Peltz, began by assembling a team of the best explainers in the world from the Exploratorium, Klutz, Stanford, the Field Museum, and leading private schools. Our CEO, Keith Schacht, followed this by building a team of strong product engineers and designers. Keith was previously at Facebook as the product manager for News Feed and Messenger.
